Chinese New Year marks the start of the lunar year, based on a calendar that follows the cycles of the moon. This year, the lunar calendar starts on February 10, which is the beginning of the Year of the Snake. 

Hohooo... Snake??? Dah abis sudah tahun Naga.. Arissa lahir tahun Dragon.. so saper lak bakal baby tahun Snake ni???

Dong Yilin, a traditional fortune teller from Beijing, believes 2013 will be neither lucky nor bad.

"2013 is the Year of the Snake. For people who were born under this Chinese zodiac sign we cannot predict a very auspicious year or a year of bad fortune," he said.

"This sign is perceived as a bit negative. Perhaps because snakes like to be in the water or in the mud, people normally do not view it as a very auspicious sign. Another reason is that it has poison and can harm people."

Some people opt to postpone their weddings, and put off having children and other big decisions to avoid them falling in the Year of the Snake.

It is not all doom and gloom, however, Dong believes the financial markets will start to improve in 2013.

"I terms of finances and stocks – this year will be more bullish than 2012. Globally, for the whole world, 2013 will be a better year financially."

A week of celebrations will take place across Asia to mark the start of the new  lunar year.

So.. we just take the +ve part.. Which is this 2013 will be a better year financially... InsyaAllah...

Dah tahu tahun ni tahun Snake.. so, rasa nak gak ler tahu the mithology about Chinese New Year.. meh baca sket apa kata pak cik Wiki... Sonok gak dpt tahu:

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian (Chinese: 年; pinyin: Nián). Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, Nian never came to the village again. The Nian was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nian became Hongjun Laozu's mount..
